So as many of you know the iPhone 4 was “officially” introduced to the world yesterday! But a lot of people don’t won’t to sit thru the almost 2 hour Keynote just to hear the iPhone 4 news, so we here at Way2Hype put together the Cliff Notes of the iPhone 4!
First off, the iPhone 4 will come in two different colors, White and Black! It will also only come in 16 and 32 GB versions. They both look awesome and trying to keep things consistent I want a white one!! (white 3g Black 3gs white iphone 4?!) But I feel like MJ said it best, it doesn’t really matter if you are black or white because this phone is badass!

The most noticeable upgrade is the screen! Its an absolute gem! It 3.5 inches of ocular ectasy! The iPhone 4 sports a 960 x 640 pixels display, which is 4 times as many pixels as its predecessor the 3Gs. It has an 800:1 Contrast ratio, which is also 4 times better than the 3Gs. The best part about the screen is the 326 pixels per inch, which is comfortably above the 300 pixels per inch threshold that a human eye can process! What?!? The human eye cannot distinguish between pixels when the pixels per inch is above 300! Here is the Apple Video Explaining it: iPhone Baller Display!

According to Apple, the glass used in the iPhone 4 display is harder, scratch resistant and extremely durable and used in high-speed trains and helicopters. The iPhone 4 also has a proximity sensor and ambient light sensor to adjust the screen brightness and turn the display off when the iPhone is held to your ear. This adds to the battery life and helps to cut down on pocket dialing (everyone has received one of those voicemails)! Of note the back of the iPhone 4 is also glass, which improves reception.
Now what powers this beast of a display! A beefed up built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The stats that Steverino (come on thats good, Cupertino+Steve Jobs=Steverino) gave at the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC – its where Apple announces all of its new flagship gear):
- Talk Time: up to 7 hours on 3g, up to 14 hours on 2g
- Standby time: Up to 300 hours
- Internet use: Up to 6 hours on 3G up to 10 hours on Wi-Fi
- Video playback: Up to 10 hours
- Audio playback: Up to 40 Hours

Apple once again put together the most beautiful smartphone ever conceived by man! The svelte 0.37 inch (9.3mm) depth is .11 inches (3mm) thinner than the 3GS! The height is the basically the same as the 3GS at 4.5 inches (115.2mm). The iPhone 4 is 2.31 inches (58.6mm) wide, which is .9 inches (3.5 mm) thinner than the 3gs.
The camera also features a huge upgrade and an offspring! The iPhone 4 sports a 5 mega-pixel still camera with HD Video Recording ( I am so pissed I recently bought a digital camera for this!) at 30 frames per second with audio. The best part of the new camera is that it has a LED Flash, which will stayed turned on even during Video Recording! As usual, the camera and videos will have geotagging and tap to focus.

Another really sweet feature is the ability to edit your HD Videos right on your iPhone! One Click sharing is also pretty sweet! So for example, after you finish editing the HD Video you recorded at the 3rd Annual Charity Chair Throwing Contest between Bob Knight and God (its pretty obvious who won, RMK) you can share it with all your friends by email, mms, mobileme, and youtube all with one click! Apple even made an iMovie App for some serious video editing all in-house!
The camera on the back isn’t the only show in-town anymore on the iPhone 4! A front facing camera will now allow for video calling (the Jetsons called and said they want their iPhone back)!! It will provide VGA-quality photos and videos at up to 30 frames per second! Super Awesome! There is a great demo video on Apples Website: the feature is called Facetime Two caveats: you have to be on wi-fi and both participants have to have an iPhone 4 (pretty good reason to get one though!).

Ok now for some geeky stuff. The iPhone 4 boasts a stainless steel frame with an Apple A4 chip with up to 32 GB of storage. It has dual mic noise suppression (it has two microphones in it to help attain the best sound quality) and the same bluetooth setup as the 3GS with a 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi antenna (the n standard can only be used on a 2.4 GHz network). Cell antenna wise it has an quad-band HSDPA/HSUPA and theoretically can download at 7.2 Mbps and upload at 5.8 Mbps, of course the networks can’t support these speeds yet. The integration of a Gyroscope is really sweet because it allows for pitch, roll, and yaw to be sensed and combined with the accelerometer it provides 6-axis motion sensing (awesome for developers!).
There is a bunch of other really awesome stuff you can do on the iPhone 4, but it is because of the new operating system, iPhone OS 4 or iOS 4 that comes pre-installed, and I don’t want to confuse anybody because if you have a 3GS or 3G the upgrade to iPhone OS 4 is free and will be available to download on Monday June 21st (if you are a developer you can already download it !) and you will be able to take advantage of a lot of the features, but will be limited by the hardware in your iPhone..i.e you will not be able to use Video Calling. The same thing when the 3GS came out and there was a compass in it, Augmented Reality apps would not work on the 3G.
The pricing of the iPhone 4 will be with a new 2 yr contract $199 – 16GB and $299-32GB. ATT is offering an early upgrade to existing iPhone owners.
I am eligible for an upgrade and my contract doesn’t expire until 7/12/2011 to give you a little reference, but you do sign another 2 year contract, the upgrade prices are: $199 – 16GB and $299 – 32GB. (same as new 2 yr contract)
The last way to acquire an iPhone 4 (thru legit channels) is buying one flat out for: $599 – 16 GB and $699 -32 GB. Thats some serious cheddar!
Those will not be unlocked either, so you will need to unlock the iPhone if you don’t want to use ATT.
The iPhone 4 will be available June 24 and pre-orders will be taken starting June 15!
With life comes death, the 3G will be discontinued and the 3GS will only be made in the 8GB version, which will retail for $99 with a new contract.
Are you going to buy one?
What are you favorite features?
What features are missing?
Are you going to upgrade?
Leave some love in the comments! Stay tuned for the iOS 4 features revealed!
