Netflix – Watch Movies, TV Shows and more Instantly on your iPhone

The wait is over! The hypeness of Netflix has just been ported to the iPhone! Netflix just recently released their amazing iPhone app! Those of the chosen (people who have an iPad) have already been able to admire the fantastic job Netflix has done transferring the web experience to the iPad and iPhone. With this free app you can browse the always growing Netflix library and watch any movie, documentary or tv show…INSTANTLY on wi-fi or 3g!

Netflix iPhone app screenshot of queue

The browsing is really intuitive, which makes it easy to spontaneously pick something to watch while you are at the airport because your flight was delayed. However, it also is really easy to setup all the movies you want to watch on the Netflix.com Instant Queue and they will be synced up across. While, we are on the subject of synchronization, the Netflix App will bookmark what you watch and sync that data across all your Netflix devices. For example, you start watching Dexter last night on your PS3, resume watching it on your iPad on the train ride to work and then switch to your iPhone to finish the last of the episode at work. The bookmarks would allow you to just resume watching in the exact place you stopped watching; independent of the device! Pretty Hype!

iPhone Screenshot of the Netflix iPhone App

The Netflix app does have a few shortcomings. You will not have any access to your dvd/blu-ray queue, which means you cannot move, add or delete dvds/blu-rays. Before you start pounding Flabongos because of this HUGE omission, relax, there is a pretty hype app called Phoneflicks (Link at the bottom) that will do all that for you and it’s free! All in all the Netflix App is awesome it has great picture quality and scrubbing threw the movies is really smooth! So I would definitely recommend: if you don’t already have Netflix  A. Getting Netflix (I pay 8.99 a month for a DVD and unlimited instant streaming) B. Download the Netflix App (Free) and Download PhoneFlicks (Free). I think this app will positively change the stereotypically boring road trip or any traveling for that matter because it works on 3G not just wi-fi, which means you can catch up on some Cult classics (TRIVIA: What movie is the screenshot below from ? Leave your answers in the comments)  or watch a few episodes of Weeds pretty much anywhere you have your iPhone! Bottom line Nation of Hypeness download this app because it’s pretty legit!

Foursquare – Check in and become the mayor!

One of the hottest genre of Apps right now is location based apps (primarily because of the money to be had from location based advertising)! The leader of this genre is Foursquare! Hence, its inclusion in the Way2Hype iPhone Starter Kit! So if you are still a little fuzzy on what a location based app is I’ll try and clear it up for you!

A location-based app uses your gps coordinates and overlays those coordinates with a map and database (mostly user generated) and allows users to check-in to various venues! The origins of location-based apps stem from conferences (the most famous being SXSW) and the ability to see where everyone is and communicate thru a public medium, such as Foursquare! Ok enough background lets get into the teeth of this app and see what all the hoopla is about!

The Foursquare interface is awesome! It is simple, informative, and easy to navigate and like many successful iPhone apps it has a great website to back up its app, Foursquare.com (I suggest doing most of the initial setup on the website its much faster). Once you launch the app, you are taken to a default home screen, which displays your friends check-ins. The app has four main tabs at the bottom: Friends, Places, Tips, Your Profile (i.e…Rabah)

iPhone App Screenshot of FourSquare Homescreen

My Foursquare Home Screen

If you look at the screen shot above you will see that there is some text under people’s check-ins…i.e. Leila R. (who is my beautiful sister if you didn’t know) – “Hanging with the Mamuskers & Steve-o.” This text is composed when you check-in because you are able to add a comment to all your check-ins if you are feeling fiesty or just want to give everyone a heads up on what your are doing at your particular venue (adding a comment is not required to check-in to a venue)! Checking-in is really easy all you do is press the Check-in button in the top right corner! A list will then populate using your GPS location and from there you may choose the venue you are at.

FourSquare Screenshot for iPhone

Places Screen

Once you locate the venue you are at just press on it and the app will take you to the Venue Profile Screen where you’ll find three buttons in the middle of the screen: People, Details, and Tips. The People button is by default the one that is selected when you arrive at a Venue’s profile screen. It shows the Mayor of the venue and any other Foursquare users that are currently checked-in. Next is the Details button which provides a Google map view of the venue’s location and a button to view nearby tweets! The last button out of the trifecta is the Tips button. This is where you will find tips and things to try at this venue! Oh No! Something wrong with the info on the Venue’s Profile Screen or just want let everyone know to try a particular dish, drink, etc! The only action needed to Flag incorrect address, Flag Venue as closed, or Add a tip is located on the Venue’s Profile Screen press the icon in the top right corner (square with arrow coming out of it) and voila, up pops a screen to allows the flagging of incorrect info or add a tip!

Apple iPhone Screenshot of FourSquare Venue Page

Venue Profile Screen

If all the info is correct and you want to leave a tip later just press the bright green Check-In button. This takes you to the Check-In Screen and this is where you can add a comment (like my sister did) or leave it blank. You also have the choice to publish to your Facebook, Twitter, neither or both (you can press the no button it will turn red and nothing will be shared or just press the F or t to turn on or off publishing to FB or Twitter). Once you have finished typing your comment and decided who to share with take the plunge and press the massive green Check-In Here button !

Apple iPhone Screenshot FourSquare

Check-In Screen

The more stops you make the more points you get, hence the more badges and mayorships you will acquire! You can become a mayor of a venue one of two ways: be the first person to check-in or the person with the most check-in’s at the venue! This little feature sparks the competitor in most users and is a great incentive to use the app more often, also with the growing popularity of Foursquare businesses are starting to offer perks thru Foursquare to people who check-in to their venue, the perks range anywhere from percentages off the bill to freebies!!! Just press the Close button in the top left hand corner to return to the Venue’s Profile Screen.

From the Friends Tab you can also tap on the user name or the venue to get to that person or venue’s profile page. So I tapped on my friend Josh L. as an example to see what he’s been up too lately (probably no good knowing josh)!

Profile Screenshot of FourSquare App on Apple iPhone

Josh’s Profile Screen

This screen is pretty much the same for everyone and it provides multiple mediums of communication for contacting the person: Text, email, call, facebook (which takes you directly into the facebook app), there is also a twitter contact, but Josh still hasn’t come over to the dark side (if you haven’t either I strongly suggest you do), here is the link, Twitter ( FYI: The Library of Congress is archiving every tweet from 2006 on, here is your chance to become part of history). The other button is the Friends button, which allows you to see everyone of that user’s friends, which makes its really easy to connect with mutual friends. All you do is press on the friend and once on their profile screen press Add “insert name” as a Friend!

Another nice feature on someone’s profile screen is being able to see their accomplishments! You can click on the Badges button and it will shoot you to a Badges page.

*the website is much easier to see accomplishments and mayorships

One more action you can peform from someone’s Profile Screen is enable/disable Pings. What is a ping? A ping is a push notification letting you know that one of your friends checked into a venue. For example, if you were friends with me on Foursquare and I checked into Starbucks, you would receive a push notification (the little blue window that pops up with info, like a text message). Pings are disabled by default, but you can enable them in Profile Tab. (press the profile tab ->press 9 dot icon in top right corner ->scroll to the bottom of the screen and press Pings:Off, repeat to turn pings back off)

*You can control the Ping setting (turn on or off) for each one of your friends from their Profile Screen, use foursquare.com if you want to change a lot of individual ping settings its much easier!

The last feature you are able to access is Shout. The Shout feature is in the top left hand corner of your Friends Tab. This just allows you to publish a 140 character message to either Facebook, Twitter or Both! This is really useful for conferences or events where you want to reach the maximum amount of people with the minimum amount of effort…i.e. Publish a shout to let everyone know where the happy hour is after the lecture lets out instead of individually texting everyone!

As Jay-Z said in the Blueprint 3 (which is awesome!) on to the next one! The Places tab, this is where all the venues will populate (the list is organized by proximity to your GPS coordinates, closest first and so on). Press on a venue to check-in as described above. If the venue isn’t listed you can Search for it in the search bar at the top. When the search shows no results or still doesn’t show the venue you are looking for there are two options: Add this place or Check-in here anyway! Adding a venue is simple and you can simply hit the Add button in the top right corner or you can select a category from the list and even add the specific address to the venue if you know it (selecting a category or adding an address are optional and not mandatory to add a venue)!

iPhone App FourSquare Screenshot

Add this place Screen

Next is the Tips tab. This is really helpful because it populates tips about the places near you! Foursquare goes even further by allowing you to press a tip and see who posted it (a quick link to their profile screen is included at the top of the tip). A very useful feature in the Tips Tab is the ability to add that tip to your My To Do’s list: the Add to my To-Do list button is located below the tip along with a I’ve done this button (see screenshot Tip Screen below)! This is really convenient if you want to make a Foursquare Bucket List! To access these To-do’s all you have to press is the My T0 Dos button at the top of the screen and up pops your Bucket list!

Apple iPhone Screenshot of Foursquare App

Nearby Tips Screen from Tips Tab

* once you have completed the tip in your My To Dos list just press the tip and select the I’ve done this! and that tip will be removed from your my to dos list!

Last, but not least, the Profile Tab. This contains your history, friends, mayorships, and badges! This Profile Tab functions the exact same as the Profile screen of other users, the main difference being instead of an info button there is a history button (foursquare assumes you know your own info, which might be a stretch for some people). The Friends button has a little more functionality and has an Add friends and Pending friend requests button (which shows your pending friend requests) along with listing all of your friends! Foursquare allows you to add friends by: Scanning your address book, find twitter friends, find facebook friends, find by name, find using phone number. I found using the find twitter friends to be quite finicky and preferred finding people thru facebook, name or phone number!

iPhone FourSquare App Screenshot

Rabah Tab (Profile Tab)

The last feature the Profile Tab has is accessed by pressing on the 9 dot square icon in the top right hand corner. Once pressed this takes you to the Stats Screen. This shows the leaderboard with your friends! This is also where you designate your ping settings (scroll to the bottom). If you press on the leaderboard it will take you to the Leaderboard screen which allows you to see not only the My Friends leaderboard, but also the leaderboard of your home city just press the link next to the My Friends leaderboard (mine is labeled: All Indianapolis) the leaderboards are refreshed every Sunday night at 11:59 pm!

Foursquare is a phenomenal app and has really taken the spot as top gun, when speaking in terms of location-based apps. Gowalla is another popular location-based app, but is loosing some traction because of it’s svelte database, meaning you always are having to add places! This app is fantastic and is only going to get better! So don’t forget to check-in and earn those badges! Think of it as a modern virtual boy scouts!

As per the usual I will include download links to both Foursquare and Gowalla and I encourage you to try both because the UI (user interface) of Gowalla is pretty cool (its passport themed!)!

iPhone users have more sex

iPhone Users Have 2 times as much sex as Android Users

So just to let the Nation of Hypeness know, that when wrangling at a bar/concert/party whatever, your only indicator is not the infamous tramp stamp anymore, start looking for an iPhone!

According to the free online dating website OkCupid‘s blog, OkTrends, over 552,000 user pics were analyzed to try and answer core questions such as: How can I look more attractive in photos? Which brand of camera takes the best photos? What time of day should I snap photos of myself? And, most importantly, which phone should I buy if I want to hook up?

The best part about this epic blog post is not it’s title ‘Don’t Be Ugly By Accident’ (which is pretty awesome in it’s own right), but the fact that iPhone users have more sex! The graph from the blog article shows that men iPhone owners have an average of 10 partners by 30 and women iPhone owners have about 12.3 partners before 30. When comparing the 8.1 and 8.8 partners for Men and Women Blackberry owners respectively, it makes Android owners seem celibate with only 6 partners for a male and 6.1 partners for a female.

Graph that iPhone users have mores sex than android and Blackberry

Graphs via ‘Don’t Be Ugly By Accident’

So what should you take away from this? Two Things: A. Women get down a lot more than they would have you believe B. If you want to get laid twice as much, buy an iPhone :)

Do you agree with the stats?

What indicators do you look for?

Never wait on hold again…with the Lucy iPhone App

According to a recent Consumer Reports survey about stuff that annoys people daily, with a 10 being “annoys tremendously”, survey takers rated the failure of a human being on a customer service line an 8.6! Never wait on hold again is the mantra for LucyPhone! I don’t know about the Nation of Hypeness, but I know I hate waiting, especially on the phone! LifeHacker said it best:

Elevator jazz, assurances of “unusual call volumes,” having to leave your phone on speaker mode—waiting on hold stinks.

Well thank hypeness for this new FREE service, LucyPhone, that also has a FREE iPhone app! You can either go to their website or use the iPhone app (they both function pretty much the same). First, find the company you are trying to call in their database.iPhone App Lucy Phone Screen Shot

If you can’t find the company you are looking for, you can also dial a number. Next, give Lucy a number to reach you at when the wait is over and she will ring you back! After you navigated through the phone tree, press ** and you can hang up. Its that simple! Check out the video below for the complete run through:

LucyPhone from Decogram Corporation on Vimeo.

Lucy Phone has revolutionized the dreadful idea of having to call customer service lines! A couple other really cool apps for making 1-800 calls a little more tolerable are Fonolo and Dial Zero! These apps won’t wait on hold for you like LucyPhone, but they are definitely worth checking out!

What do you hate about being on hold?

Will you use LucyPhone next time or just take the auditory abuse of that horrific music?

#1 Reason to Download the Facebook iPhone App

I don’t know about the Nation of Hypeness, but I know I see my Facebook Profile image like a badge of myself, a triumphant representation of me and I put a lot of thought into my profile pics (not really it just sounded a lot more epic)!I think a lot of people on Facebook do. For example,  when you starting dating someone you change your profile pic to include said person(actually in 3 states I think a facebook relationship constitutes as an actual marriage). Another example, when you jump off something cool (check current my profile pic). Plus, one of my all-time favorites, when you meet that sports icon or celeb! So wouldn’t it be cool if all of your friends’ profile photos were synced with their contacts in your iPhone and updated every time they changed their profile pictures?

Screenshot of iPhone with Facebook App

Well it just so happens those clever folks over at Facebook made this fiction reality! All you do is open up your Facebook App go to your friends list and press the little blue Sync button in the upper right hand corner! Switch the syncing to on and it will sync all the names that match!

Screenshot of syncing Facebook Pics with contacts

Which brings me to my next point, nicknames. I used to be a habitual nicknamer (it was just easier for me to remember people that way) until lately because of the Facebook App. The App matches people’s names. So unfortunately, Facebook cannot recognize Ashley hot blonde or Amber Gym, even though I know precisely who those people are. So now I am an address book contact purist I always try and get everyone’s first and last name and that way I get to see their facebook pic in my contacts and when they call!

Who thinks they have the best Profile Pic in the Nation of Hypeness?

What kind of profile pic poster are you? Traditional, Crazy, Hype, Action Shots?(funny list from CollegeCandy)

Jailbreakme.com iPhone Screenshot

How to Jailbreak your iPhone – No Computer Neeeded!

So you want to Jailbreak your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad? All you have to do is visit JailbreakMe.com on your device and follow the directions  and voila Jailbroken! No computer needed! So how does it work?

JailBreak.Me.com iPhone Screenshot

The way it works is that the web page you visit loads a simple PDF document, an article on Gizmodo.com has a great explanation:

It just requires the user to visit a web address using Safari. The web site can automatically load a simple PDF document, which contains a font that hides a special program. When your iOS device tries to display the PDF file, that font causes something called stack overflow, a technical condition that allows the secret ninja code inside the font to gain complete control of your device.

The result is that, without any user intervention whatsoever, that program can do whatever it wants inside your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Anything you can imagine: Delete files, transmit files, install programs running on the background that can monitor your actions… anything can be done.

So after you Jailbreak your iPhone how can you protect it? Well there isn’t much protection, but there is an app on the Cydia store that you can download called PDF Loading Warner. So in summation, as long as you don’t go to any PDF links and don’t load any PDF from any  non-trusted sources you’ll be fine!

Screenshot iPhone 4 from Cydia Screenshot PDF Loading

Apple has yet to say anything about this issue. So remember if you do jailbreak your iPhone be aware of the risks!

Will you Jailbreak your iOS device?

Does this security vulnerability scare you or do you not care?

Best Video Chat App Free for iPhone Knocking

Knocking Video App – Free Video Chat for non-iPhone 4′ers

Ever wish you had the ability to show your friend/significant other what you are seeing at that exact moment in real time? For example you are at a concert backstage, in some forbidden area you shouldn’t be, or even perhaps share an “intimate moment” with your bf /gf, but you don’t have an iPhone 4 (or at least one of you doesn’t because Video Chatting aka FaceTime is only iPhone 4 to iPhone 4)? Well don’t fret Way2Hypers the opportunity is Knocking at the Nation of Hypeness’ door (sorry for the terrible pun I just couldn’t resist)!

An app called Knocking is the perfect way to catch those great moments you cannot share in-person with your family and friends. Knocking is a live one-way video stream that will show you everything that the sender is viewing. As you probably know, the iPhone 4 has the new video-calling called FaceTime ; however, not all of us have the funds, desire, or whatever your motive may be to upgrade to the iPhone 4 (I am still waiting on the white one, which I bet comes out in Early Oct. because Sept. 30 is the last day you can apply for a free bumper). So the next best thing is Knocking!

Free Video Chat Screenshot for the Apple iPhone

Knocking allows the sender to use his/her iPhone camera as a “virtual eye” to enable the receiver of the knock to see everything that the sender is seeing in real time! As long as you are connected to wi-fi or 3G network this app will work for you. First, you will need to set up your profile, you can do it in the app itself or use the website KnockingLive.com. After that is setup, you need to find friends to knock, the app allows you to parse your iPhone Contacts, Gmail contacts or just enter email addresses of people you know have the Knocking App.

Screenshot of Friends List for Apple iPhone using Knocking App Video ChatFinally, you are ready to knock or be knocked! Your friend’s list is split into Family and Friends just press on whoever you want to Knock and let the games begin!

Video Chat using Knocking App on iPhone Screenshot of Downtown Indianapolis

One of the major critiques of this app is that it does not have sound.  One way to circumvent the lack of sound is to call your friend on speaker phone and then “knock” them.  Keep in mind this only seems to work if the both parties are logged into the Knocking App. Another shortcoming of Knocking is that the video is only a one-way stream, meaning that the sender cannot see what the receiver is viewing. On the contrary, I can think of a few situations that one-way video chat is advantageous ;) Well, I guess you can’t have your cake and eat it too… unless of course you both have the iPhone 4. So as of yet, this is the best app for catching those memorable or even intimate moments and sharing them in real-time with your friends or lovers!

What would you use/do use Knocking for?

Is this the solution to long distance relationships?

Best Golf iPhone App Golfshot and Golfscape Screenshots

Golfscape – Your Personal Caddy for over 33,000 Courses

Golf is a peculiar sport. Every golfer will tell you that you need three things to be successful: Time, Money, and Equipment. Well I am adding a fourth criterion for being a successful golfer, the iPhone app Golfscape or Golfshot! The apps are made by Shotzoom Software ! The two apps: Golfshot, which is $29.99 and Golfscape, which is $19.99 are a bit pricey, but whats worse a $30.00 hole in your wallet (no pun intended) or gun-smoking a perfect drive 20 yards over the green to double bogey because you misjudged the distance!

Apple iPhone Screenshot using Golfscape iPhone app

So whats the difference, well Golfshot and Golfscape both grab from an enormous database comprised of GPS data for holes on over 33,000 courses all over the world: Check out the list ! Both apps basically work in the same way, but just present the data differently (Golfscape uses AR, Golfshot uses regular maps). They use the GPS location of your iPhone to show you relevant distances to: greens, bunkers, doglegs, and layup points! Granted these are only estimations, but according to one user that has tried this app out the estimations are incredibly accurate and consistent!

At one point I held my phone up, pointed it at the green and waited a few moments for the app to zero in on my distance. Eventually it settled on 73 yards. I looked around on the course for a sprinkler head, which normally has the distance written on it, and there just so happened to be one right next to where I was standing. It had the number “73″ written on it.

Here is the full article:

Golfshot iPhone app screenshot #1 golf app

Both apps are great, but Golfscape takes it to another level using Augmented Reality! Below is a their Youtube Video. Personally, I would recommend Golfshot over Golfscape because AR is not perfect in any app yet (even though they do a great job in Golfscape), but the Golfscape AR interface is far more impressive and will definitely produce the “AWE” factor in the Clubhouse and guys lets be honest sometimes usability takes a backseat when showing off to the boys!

Will this help my golf game, probably not, but for people who actually can control and hit distances with certain clubs this could be a really nice addition! Plus you can keep score and store stats! AR is the future, especially with the gyroscope in the new iPhone 4! Check out the Yelp App and AroundME App for some other cool uses of AR!

* Remember: you need an iPhone 3GS to use any Augmented Reality (AR) app

Delayed Gratification or Instant Bliss – What type of iPhone User are you?

The human mind is an intriguing beast! What makes us make the decisions we make? Well if I knew the answer to that question I would be writing this article somewhere on a beach in Belize or Thailand instead of Naptown, but that is here no there. The ultimate question we always face in everyday life is delayed gratification…i.e. waiting for something you truly desire or instant bliss….i.e. substituting your primary desire with a more accessible less satisfying alternative.

So I pose the question to the Nation of Hypeness - what type of iPhone user are you?

*Let me premise this first by saying there is no difference in iPhones besides the cosmetic White or Black Finish

Instant Bliss -  Buying a Black iPhone 4

The black iPhone 4 is readily available for purchase right now and you can fulfill your desires of video calling, tweeting, and depositing checks all from your iPhone instantly by plunking down the necessary dough. The black version of the iPhone 4 is slick, elegant and many people put a case on their iPhones so the color would be a mute point to many. This need for casing your iPhone is exemplified by the “antennae-gate” issue! Furthermore, with over 3 million sold and only 1.7% being returned I say that the best smartphone out there (according to Consumer Reports, even though they won’t recommend it) is satisfying to almost every owner. However, how many people were pressured into buying a black iphone 4 that wanted a white one because of the need to have it NOW?

picture of black Apple iphone 4 front back and profile images

Delayed Gratification – Buying a White iPhone 4

As the Great White Hype continues and the release date for the white handset slated for the ambigious “later this year”, iPhone users are put into the pressure cooker. I will be the first to admit that I am waiting for the release of the White iPhone 4, but I know many iPhone and soon-to-be iPhone users that have caved to the unrelenting siren song that is the Black iPhone 4! If you don’t already own an iPhone and you wanted the white one I can understand the defection and purchasing of it’s black counterpart, but let me drop some words of wisdom from a past iPhone purchase.

My first iPhone was actually black, but when I saw this magical Ivory Beacon of individualism on the ear of some patron at the Herman B Wells library, I knew then that in all its glory the cookie-cutter (not in a derogatory sense, I currently own a black iPhone) black iPhone would never fulfill my desire to be unique and different. So after plundering the wonderful city of Bloomington for days on end, I finally located a white iPhone ! I regretfully had to dip out of my Drugs in America Class and shot over to the AT&T store that claimed to possess the white 32 GB iPhone I had madly been searching for. After the exchange, return and $50 fee for switching I finally had my primary desire! The feeling was pure ecstasy, and it didn’t stop for weeks because everytime I was at a party or social gathering I would always get that question that every individualist wants to be asked “It comes in white?”

Apple iPhone 4 in white images of front back and side profile

So my question for the Nation of Hypeness is this: What type of iPhone User are you Instant Bliss or Delayed Gratification?

Also as a side note here…those of you with a black iPhone 4 that wanted white, I have something special for you!  Spend $250 for a white painted front and back glass piece as well as a new Retina display (WARNING:  YOU HAVE TO TAKE YOUR IPHONE 4 APART YOURSELF AND VOID YOUR WARRANTY!), which I do not recommend.  Your other option is to buy a newly found case that is clear on the sides, to show the impressive aesthetic of the antenna, and the back of the case is painted exactly like the white iPhone 4.  I recommend the white case, which I am purchasing after this post, it’s a case that is only 1mm thick and you can enjoy the looks of a black AND white iPhone 4!
